Are You Taking Too Many Prescriptions?

June 5, 2025 by Las Vegas-admin

Is your pill container getting more crowded as you age?

While medications are essential for treating various health issues, taking numerous prescriptions can pose significant risks. One primary concern is the increased likelihood of adverse drug interactions, where one medication may affect the efficacy or toxicity of another, leading to unforeseen side effects. Additionally, older adults often experience altered drug metabolism due to physiological changes associated with aging, making them more susceptible to medication-related complications. The phenomenon of a “prescribing cascade” further exacerbates this issue, where side effects from one drug are misinterpreted as new medical conditions, resulting in additional prescriptions that may not be necessary.  Moreover, polypharmacy is linked to cognitive decline, increased fall risk, and a higher incidence of hospitalizations. To mitigate these dangers, healthcare providers should regularly review and rationalize medication regimens, ensuring that each prescription is essential and that potential drug interactions are carefully considered.
